REMS
Research Experiences in Marine Science
HIMB REMS is an advanced, inquiry-driven early college marine biology course that provides Hawaiʻi high school students and recent graduates with hands-on, place-based research experiences. The program aims to expand access to marine science and strengthen science and environmental literacy among students who have been historically marginalized from marine STEM fields.
Based at Moku o Loʻe (Coconut Island) in Kāneʻohe Bay, students learn alongside HIMB researchers and explore how human impacts and global change shape Hawaiʻi’s coral reef ecosystems.

Founded in 1947, HIMB is situated on Moku o Lo‘e (Coconut Island), in Kāne‘ohe Bay, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i. The island itself provides a unique living laboratory surrounded by 64 acres of coral reef designated by the State of Hawai‘i as a Hawai‘i Marine Laboratory Refuge.
As a research unit within the University of Hawai‘i’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, HIMB is home to world-class facilities for researchers and students in wide ranging disciplines related to tropical marine science.

In addition to earning college credit and receiving a stipend to help offset the costs of participating in the program, students gain a meaningful and immersive introduction to marine biology and scientific research. Through hands-on, place-based learning experiences, students deepen their understanding of coastal resources and the impacts of human activities and climate change on coral reef ecosystems. Equally important, students develop valuable skills in scientific literacy, communication, teamwork, leadership, and mentorship that extend beyond the field of marine science.
Participation in REMS CORE establishes a strong foundation for students to continue their educational and professional development through the broader REMS Pathway, which offers ongoing opportunities to build upon their experiences, strengthen their skills, and grow as students, scientists, mentors, and community leaders.

We offer an advanced, inquiry-driven and experiential marine biology summer course that builds science and environmental literacy skills for Hawai‘i high school students, recent graduates or early undergraduate students.
Topical content will be taught over a two-week period, with appropriate emphasis placed on marine conservation, stewardship and sustainability. At the completion of the first two weeks of instruction, student teams will conceptualize and execute along side their instructor mentor a ‘mini’ research project over the following four weeks. Students will work both in the field and in the lab at HIMB.
